Oxidation Using a Gas-Liquid Membrane Reactor

This application note illustrates the use of the Vapourtec R-Series system with gas- liquid “tube-in-tube” reactor to perform in flow an oxidation previously shown in batch in the publication

“Transition-Metal free approach to efficient aerobic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones under mild conditions(see “Reference Publication”, below)

 

In that study, TEMPO acts as the key oxidizing ingredient, NaNO₂ as a recyclable oxygen activator and oxygen as the terminal oxidant. This green and sustainable process has been optimized out of the TEMPO/Br₂/NaNO₂ system and resulted in HCl and HBr as cheap and readily available Br₂ alternatives. The general methodology comprises a reaction under ambient air and temperature, with CH₂Cl₂ as solvent and reaction times of approximately 10 hours.
