Decarboxylative Cross-Couplings with a Soluble Catalyst System

This Application Note illustrates how the R-Series flow chemistry system can be used to develop a transfer of novel decarboxylative cross-coupling reactions from batch to flow.

 

Aromatic carboxylic acids provide an attractive surrogate for organometallic reagents usually employed in traditional transition metal-catalysed cross-coupling reactions (Scheme 1, above). Under the extrusion of carbon dioxide a carbon nucleophilic species is generated in situ by a coin metal catalyst, therefore obviating the need for stoichiometric amounts of metal for the coupling reaction. However, up to this point decarboxylative coupling reactions have exclusively been performed as slurries due to the low solubility of carboxylate salts and decarboxylation catalysts, precluding their application in flow systems.
