PBA Solubility Measurement Using Taledyne Isco Syringe Pumps

The solubility of physical blowing agents plays a key role in the manufacturing of plastic foams. This solu- bility study aims to investigate the amount of gas that can dissolve in polymer melt at a given temperature and pressure. Volumetric and gravimetric methods have been widely used to measure the solubility of different blowing agents and their blends in polymers. However, the gravimetric method requires an equation of state (EOS) to compensate for the buoyancy effect of swelling. Magnetic suspension balance (MSB), a gravimetric method, is one of the most commonly used apparatus to measure solubility. It requires a pump with a controller to dose the gas. Since solubility is a function of pressure at a given temperature, a high pressure pump with a controller plays a vital role for measuring solubility. The stability and accuracy of the measure- ment strongly depend on the pump and controller, such as the Teledyne Isco syringe pump.
